Opinions on wall paneling

Yes I should have said, not 2 layers of drywall but one OSB plus one drywall. That would hold the short finishing nails which won't go all the way through the wall. I was afraid you'd say that. Not that I expect to remove the panels but you never know. I figured I'll be totally sick of adhesives aft...

Thoughts on Atmos speakers in ceiling?

Thanks. Of course it's also a bit risky to mount in the joist space if I ever decide to change speakers. But at least that's an option. I need to find some low profile height speakers.

Thoughts on Atmos speakers in ceiling?

So, I'm looking at a design that would include an inside out ceiling. The ceiling is not all that high (about 7 1/2ft after the soft ceiling is in place). The room would be set up for stereo initially but I'd like to do some prewiring for future Atmos, without too much up front investment. After con...

Opinions on wall paneling

I'm looking at a design that would include room in room construction with double drywall for the inner shell. For aesthetic purposes I'm considering a thin (1/8in, somewhat floppy) wood panel over the drywall. I would attach room treatments over that. My question is, how to attach the paneling. I've...

Studio HVAC: All about mini-split systems, HRV's and ERV's.

Thanks, I'm glad to hear that. It didn't seem likely that something that's virtually hermitically sealed would be prone to failure at such low pressures. If you don't mind I drag this out just a bit more, would you consider something like Master Flow (which is sold at big box stores) to be good qual...

Studio HVAC: All about mini-split systems, HRV's and ERV's.

This seems needlessly complex for such a short run. Space is very tight as you can see from the pic, and the geometry is not friendly. Do you think standard flexduct is durable enough to seal up like that and, if you wouldn't trust it, can you recommend another round , flexible duct that you would t...

Thanks, that would work in some situations. For me, the two silencers would be offset from each other, both vertically and laterally. So I definitely need something flexible. The distance is about 4ft and crosses a couple studs to get from one to the other. Here's an example. I think it's a pretty c...

Studio HVAC: All about mini-split systems, HRV's and ERV's.

Hi all, I have another relevant question. A lot of HVAC designs involve silencers in each leaf connected by duct inside the gap between walls or ceiling. I know it's recommended to use flex-duct here to avoid a hard connection between leaves. As I'm looking at my own design, it occurs to me that, on...

Thoughts on this HVAC silencer?

I don't know if it was clear but the big side of this box would live in an external equipment room (where the ERV is). The tiny bit of wall represents the whole outer leaf. I've always understood the wall penetration needed to maintain the same mass as the silencer, hence the "sleeves" tha...

Thoughts on this HVAC silencer?

This thread seems as good a place as any to ask about the outer silencers. I think this design is pretty standard but I wanted to make sure the wall penetration is sufficient to maintain isolation. The silencer would all be 2 layers of mass, as is the wall. It's a bit more complicated this way becau...

Thoughts on this HVAC silencer?

I'm going to try the HRV on its own and see if it's sufficient. So the fan is an option. What do you think about the two options in the last diagram? The extra baffle vs a larger plenum? Does it matter which way I go? I'm also thinking in either case the last baffle would mark the end of the silence...

Thoughts on this HVAC silencer?

I've seen the split design and that would be ideal but I don't see how I could do it given the geometry of the room. Even if I ran another duct down the adjacent joist and entered through the side, I think it would compromise the structure. Here's another quick layout of the room configuration. I sh...

Thoughts on this HVAC silencer?

I'm working on some design ideas for a single room studio. For background's sake, the general plan is room-in-room construction with 2 layers of mass in each leaf. It's about 300 sq ft overall. I was planning to go the route of placing a minisplit in the room and depositing fresh air a few feet abov...

How to build an "inside-out" ceiling.

Question on this approach: I'm looking into a similar ceiling for a build that will use double drywall for each leaf (to give you an idea of the level of soundproofing). As I understand it, the inner leaf will need a ring of joist material on top of the walls to maintain the isolation of the room. I...

Private studio in Slovakia

Ah, thanks. I did actually read that a while back. Think my head is overflowing... It's probably where I picked up some of my general ideas. I'm still a little concerned about what's inside those protective white bundles. Often it's multiple lines or tubes. So even with the outside caulked and airti...
