I want light and sound isolation

Hi Glenn - Thanks! I always appreciate your clear responses!

Backer rod and caulk sounds like a good solution. But what is the logic on leaving 2mm under my baseboard?

I want light and sound isolation

Hi Again, I've got a 2 random questions: 1. My electricity/internet is coming into the room through 2 plastic conduits - one for high voltage (230v - 2 outlet circuits, one light circuit) the other for an internet cable. As I was closing up the inner leaf, I attached the two conduits with zip ties, ...

I want light and sound isolation

The room is coming along - see photo. The wood inner structure is done, wood fiber insulation is in place, the rest is on it's way... I haven't yet decided what to do with the floor. And I'd like to decide before putting up the drywall, in case I decide to do a screed, which might warp the drywall. ...

How to run the drainline on a mini split

Glen, I'm ready to follow your advice, and just run the drain line outside on to the ground. However I've been trying to figure out how much water is going to come out, and it appears that between 5-20 gallons a day come out - this sounds enormous. My mini split is 2500w. If its 5 gallons per day, I...

How to run the drainline on a mini split

Thanks Glenn! Because of the climate I live in, and the construction materials used and my planned use of the room, I'm imagining that my mini split will be used 70% of the time as a heater and maybe 30% as an air conditioner. I'm I correct in assuming that only the air conditioning mode will create...

How to run the drainline on a mini split

Hi all, I'm installing a mini split in my room-in-a-room construction. My interior and exterior units are about 15m apart, with the refrigerant tubes running through an attic and garage. My question is what to do with the condensation drain line. I don't believe I can run it along with the refrigera...

Or perhaps cork would be a similar/better option. This link is in French, but maybe helpful

Where to install baffle boxes

One related question:
My room is roughly 5m by 6m. As for the inlet and outlet, how far apart do these need to be? Do they need to be at opposite ends of the room? I'm aiming for 75cfm.

Where to install baffle boxes

Hello, The details of my project are here: h ttps://www.digistar.cl/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1142 I'm building a sound isolated practice room, and I'm afraid I may have painted myself into a corner... The outer leaf of my 2-leaf system is complete, and I'll be working next on the decoupled inne...

I want light and sound isolation

Hi Glenn, No, my intention is to have a flat ceiling. The roof structure cannot be altered, and that's one of the reasons I've decided on a flat ceiling. But either way, if I understand what you've just said, you've suggested that under the porous roof tiles I could put insulation, a proper mass bou...

I want light and sound isolation

Hi Stuart, I think this is the missing piece of information: my roof (which you're thinking of as the 3rd leaf) is VERY far from being airtight. It's a tile roof, which keeps the rain out, but other than that it's like a sieve. I can see light through it. So my outer leaf is currently as such: I hav...

I want light and sound isolation

Here's an update on the project. Things are moving along. One issue I've run into is my false ceiling for the outer leaf. My plan was to do a suspended ceiling using threaded rods attached to the roof beams. I was hoping to follow Stuart's suggestion of doubling the layers, OSB on the upper/outside ...

Converting an attached barn in France

Great, thanks! What would be a good distance for the cavity? I was shooting for something like 30cm, but if I went up to 50cm, would that be worth the loss of space in the room? Maybe another way of asking the same question is: what's the equation to calculate sound isolation related to cavity depth?

And Stuart - You're the best!! Many thanks for all the clear information. I'm feeling a lot more comfortable going forward. Just a few clarifications: 6082 And for the upper part of the opening, I’ll build a wood structure with OSB 3 and 15cm of wood fiber insulation panels. Here again you will need...
