Cheers Glenn, yes, 70 Hz is almost certainly the ceiling. Confirmed by noting changes at that frequency when I move the mic up or down. The ceiling is woefully under treated at the moment so there's huge scope for improvement. I'm thinking something like 200mm deep low density insulation over the en...

I've tried to make a fair comparison between before and after the speaker flush mounts were installed. Here's an SPL chart of red (before) and black (after).Var smoothing to give a readable presentation of highs while preserving detail in the lows. Right before soffit - after soffit comparison.png I...

That's a good call Glenn thank you, and a simple and effective way to test for it. I'm sure I have some of that pipe insulation downstairs in the garage.

If it turns out to be an issue I could probably route a rounded edge on the sharp edge of the soffit.

Cheers!

LOL! My subjective notes from listening to reference tracks after fitting flush mount side panels and filling structures with insulation - ambience e.g. snare room sound, reverbs, sparkly effects (Lose Yourself To Dance) even more present. - bass note that was too much in "Motherboard" tam...

Time for an update! I decided to replace the buzzy acoustic flex hose on the speaker ventilation with standard flex hose. When surrounded by the insulated outer layer there is no buzzing. Hallelujah! Also shown is the side panel of the soffit. It's made from one layer of 18mm MDF and another layer o...

Basement live music/rec room

6791 My goal is to create a space to live jam/record music while reducing the db by at least 60. With the caveat that I have no personal experience of intentionally achieving as high a level of reduction, my understanding from the builds of others is that 60dB of full audible spectrum reduction is ...

6785 Been quite busy with my "day job" lately so progress has been slow, but saw a lot of progress in the last week I wanted to share. Ive been a bit demotivated by the project. Its difficult and exhausting, the level of detail required is also hard to balance with my own skill level. Ive...

I stuck the cooker hood filter material to the inside of the soffit speaker box with contact spray glue. Unfortunately there wasn't as much room at the top so I couldn't fit the duct liner there as I'd hoped to do. 20240327_163906.jpg Duct flanges on the plenum and bottom of the speaker box. 2024032...

Good article. Also in Scotland, "A fish supper" is what you ask for when you'd like "fish and chips" :-)

I removed the "plastic barrier between the duct and the glass wool". It's that brittle crinkly type plastic, really noisy when it moves, like a crisp (potato chips for USA?) packet. I replaced it with food wrap (cling film) round the duct and that is silent. Problem solved.

Cheers!

Thanks Glenn. Yes, definitely related to the speaker output, it's fine with airflow.

On to connecting up the ventilation for the speaker boxes with 80mm diameter acoustic flex flex duct. One end will be attached to the smaller flange on the top of the plenum. The room ventilation will be attached to the larger 200mm diameter flange. 2024-03-19 15.03.28.jpg Here's the inner hose of t...

Thank you! Stuart mentioned this with regard to dealing with unwanted audio resonances within the speaker box: ...for resonance. There will "stuff" going on in there, between the speaker and the box. Cutting large holes and using abundant insulation around the speaker can help deal with th...

Stand alone "room in a room" studio build in Orange NSW Australia

No worries  I installed the trapdoor because I anticipated having to access the ventilation filter box behind it every 6 months or so to change the filter. If it was just ducting and I was confident with the joins I'd probably just have drywalled it back up again. If the drywall was multi layer...

Thank you! Even in this unfinished state they've added another dimension of enjoyment to recording, listening to and mixing music. That big far clear sound is righteously joyous to behold. And I was reading Bruce Swedien's book recently where he discussed the importance of the accurate reproduction ...
