Space Coupling Diffusors with PVC Tubing?

I have a bedroom studio with tons of treatment. (I've probably spent ~3-5k so commercial value is probably 2x that. I could go into the details of that but it exceeds the scope of what I intended with this thread). It was recommended to me to add 1 or ideally 3 4'x4' space coupling diffusors (the open cell variety that look like sock/tie drawer organizers). These things are pretty expensive for my modest means. They are also a DIY challenge. I don't even own a table saw and they require a lot of material. I'm trying to come up with a very inexpensive solution. One option is plastic sock drawer organizers from Amazon. Another is PVC tubing. I thought I could cut 2 or 2.5" segments from 2" PVC tubing and glue them into a grid but you don't end up with square cells obviously, you end up with round ones, plus a bunch of little round ones at the intersects (reference picture). Does this idea have merit? Can I make a space coupling diffusor from PVC tubing? Is 2" diameter, 2 or 2.5" high a good geometry. Am I constrained to a grid? I can image some artful arrangement potential. This is secondary of course. I would spray paint the array at the end before I hang it. Inputs are welcomed. Thanks.
