My friend Mike helped me and we finally managed to get the floor in the live room down. It was a challenge to get this 3 pieces lined up but it turned out pretty damn good. WE started on the spaceship as that piece needed to be perfect and it turned out perfect. Floor looks pretty amazing and will provide a unique environment that I hope inspires people to take their music out into space.. The posters are all finished as well except one corner where they will put the heating and cooling unit (still no date).. JOules is supposed to come tomorrow or the next day and complete the rest of the job so by Weds we will be done and can start to record!! So exciting.. Look forward to see the final acoustic measurments as well.
Peace
Scott aka DR Space...

looks cool! I can imagine it getting quite trippy in that room if under the influence of certain substances...

What are the wall mounted panels? Just absorption?

We will have some lamps for ambience for sure.. Where can I get a huge lava lamp. I am up for that. As for the panels, they are absorptive and each one is tuned slightly differently so you can move them around to change the sound of the room as you need. I still need some gobos and small carpets.. Sound in this live room is pretty awesome, Joules said it is one of the best he has ever heard..

not sure where to get one. i've seen some pseudo ones 4-6' tall. most look like clear Lucite, or even glass, tubes on a base with the magic lava gloop and a decent heater lamp in the bottom.

Joules was here the last few days and we got all the patch bay tested and it all works and the outboard gear is in but sadly, one of my db25 8 channel cables was too short to get the ASP880 (2nd one) fully connected and also the Mac Mini required a cable (USB-C to thunderbolt 2), that prevented us from connecting the UAD Apollo units to the computer so we could not set everything up.. Very frustrating.. Gear is moved into the room and the rear speaker stands are made, the storage space is constructed.. It is looking awesome.. So another 10days before I will have everything and Joules can visit again. Damn.. Like 98% of the way... here are a few new pics..

Lovely stuff. Are the speaker stands filled with sand or something like that?

And you have a full Trace Elliot stack! Amazing! :yahoo: I have a 4x10 Trace cab - wonder if it is the same model? All I'll say is, just as well these wells are good at reducing sound :D

Cheers!

[quote="endorka"]Source of the post Lovely stuff. Are the speaker stands filled with sand or something like that?

NO but they are pieces of the laminated beams for the ceiling so they are damn heavy.. 30kg each or something..

We have some good bass gear for sure.. The other stack is a custom cabinet set from the Bass Lab in Copenhagen. Great sound as well.
We are getting closer but I have some techinical issues I can not solve at the moment with the computer, SPL surround control center and speakers, and UAD Apollo units. damn...

peace

We had the first recording session today with LUNA and it went pretty well. 5 Jams between 20 and 40mins long were recorded successfully. Next step is some mixing but the recording directly to the Neve 1073 UAD plug in on all channels sounded great. Used the Studer tape plug in as well on some of the channels. Very nice sounding recording... Will post a sample in a week or so, I hope..

This is a recording from our first session in the studio.. Drum machine, guitar, bass and synths.. Enjoy if you have the patience to listen to this 27min improvised piece.. Everything is working great now. Only have to get a few things to get the video monitoring and talkback working.

Sept 5-11th, we had the first real massive studio session using almost all the channels (22) and this included 3 guitar set ups (Fender, Orange, Marshall), bass (Ampeg), full drum kit, congas, bongos, 9 channels of keyboards and one room mic in the ceiling. We left all the mics on even if only some of the instruments were being used.. We learned a lot about the process. At one point 8 people were in the jam session.

The sound we captured was excellent using the Audient ASP880 and UAD apollos and LUNA. We had all the mics and cables and stands that we needed so that was good.  I had hoped I was prepared for whatever we might need and I was!  A couple more GOBOs could have been nice though.

Our biggest problem was the live room sound.  We tried on the first days to use headphones but this was too difficult for people to get what they wanted (as I only have two headphone mixes possible at the moment and not enough experience with using the cues) and the drums were so loud people were blowing their ears out in the headphones to compete with the loud drums.  I have to have a drum shield if you have a hard hitting and loud drum kit. We ended up putting some of the bed mattresses from the back room on the walls around the drums to make it less harsh in the room and putting a lot of instruments into the PA and people wore earplugs instead of headphones. Drums are just too loud if you have a rock band..

We also discovered that it was a huge mistake to not put bass traps in the room.  The bass frequencies were huge and all over the room at times and very bad in the corners, in the front of the room. I do not know about the drum corner or where the fuse box was but in my synth corner, it was horrible..

Everyone agreed the room had a great sound and you can really hear this on the recordings. The drums are so lively and we only used 3 mic (overhead ribbon mic, snare bottom and kick).. Now the months of mixing.. 42 pieces ranging from 7mins to 64mins, with an avg length of about 25mins were recorded. Wow..

Priority before the next rock band records is to build some bass traps..... I remember their was some good designs on this forum somewhere... I will search.... I have some leftover rockwool but do not know if the density measurements are on the bag or not..
