Nice one - several truckloads of filling there I imagine?

Greetings Jennifer,
Yep. The concrete from the pool was broken up first and is at the bottom, then soil, then clean stone.
This process was worth every penny of paying someone else to do it (properly). We used a company that specializes in pool removal.
All the best,
Paul

It brought to mind some work I did on our garden a few years ago. The gravel areas had dirt all the way through to the weed mat so impossible to keep weed free. With the help of an assistant I dug up all the gravel then washed it clean with a pressure hose and huge sieve. We piled the gravel up on the drive to dry out before putting it back.
It took several days of backbreaking yet satisfying work, and I thought it would be a laugh to calculate the weight of gravel from the size of the pile. It was 6 tons, a tiny fraction of what you've just had done. So never mind the demolishing of the pool, I fully appreciate why you'd pay someone else to do all that earth and gravel moving as well. The weight shifted and effort required seems much more than appearance would suggest for a lot of these type of jobs.
Cheers,
Jennifer

Great! So they already poured a concrete slab there? Or is that just gravel fill?

Greetings Stuart,
Just fill. My thread in Studio Design has the update. It will be at least another month before concrete.
All the best,
Paul

Greetings Stuart,
After all of my reading on the subject, I was under the distinct impression that building a studio was a "crazy idea"...
Also, your phrasing suggests a multi-level marketing scheme...
In any case, I look forward to hearing your plan.
All the best,
Paul

Greetings all,
I need to change the name of this thread to "And so it grinds to a halt...".
Our plan has apparently run afoul of local codes: we cannot simply replace like with like (in terms of structures). The swimming pool (and its building) were granted zoning variances (back in 1972) that are now frowned upon. So, to make a long story short, we need to revise our plan considerably.
We will convert the garage into my wife's art studio, and build a much smaller structure for my own. Unfortunately, we have to start from scratch with the permit-to-get-a-permit stage. Another six-week wait, once we submit the revised plan (which I am working on, and might require a survey of our property) that satisfies the codes. While I would like to get construction rolling before the cold weather sets in, but methinks it will be spring before anything concrete (pun intended) gets done.
At least we have a good excuse to clean the garage...
All the best,
Paul

Damn! That must be VERY annoying! Just when you thought you had a good plan that would work well, along comes bureaucracy to kick you in the shins. I sometimes think that bureaucrats have nothing better to do than to try to make life more complicated and miserable for the rest of us.
I do hope you get your new plan approved real soon, and that it all works out! Looking forward to an update...

Greetings Stuart,
Glad you are recovering.
Not the shins.
Yes, I am working on the revised version, which hopefully will not rankle the powers-that-be.
The garage art studio has priority, and I think it will be done before winter.

Paul
