The control room walls are up now. The Ceiling beams will go in place tomorrow. Making progress..

Only for the control room drawing and I have to ask Joules if it is ok to share this before I post it.

The rest is pretty close to the original except the right wall of the live room is no longer a rectangle: 5 x 6.27 x 6.2 x 4.08m.... This is better acoustically and Joules said even without any treatment yet it sounds really good for a live room. We have also removed the storage room from the corner of the live room..

Joules has pulled the cables (data and electricity) over to the house now and will connect them. We have also made the steps and had the tiles laid in the front of the studio and it looks really nice... Still a bit to do around the edges.. Slow progress..

Zephyr is very happy with the new patio. We will finish it off tomorrow as well as the nice steps. There will be a nice rockery along the side of the building as well in a few days... Joules made a lot of progress today on the front wall, filling it with sand and other dense materials and made the speaker boxes, wrapped in dead sheet with ventilation holes, got the rest of the wires pulled under the live room floor to the control room... THis is what will go in the walls of the live room in 3 or 4 locations. See below... Dr Who is actually going to be another ethernet cable. This should allow us everything we will need as these XLR connections can go either way...

Good progress is being made on the control room now. The front wall is nearly complete and super dense as it is filled with sand nearly up to the top and then with compressed foam close it off and stop any reverberation with in the wall. They did the first layer of dead sheet with a material that is made of old clothes that are shredded up and compressed into a roll about an inch thick. After this was applied all the way around the walls, the cellinet boards were attached to the beams. The room has almost no reverberation at all now. Incredible change in the sound. Tomorrow they do the ceiling with the deadsheet and 1 inch thick fabric. They will also add the fabric frames on the top and then the bass traps.

note: for those where celinet isn't available (like US) a similar product is called Tectum V - wood fibers and portland cement - very often used in gyms and auditoriums. https://www.tectum.com/ of course there are lots of options...

Hello Glenn... That is good that there is an alternative in the USA. These boards are heavy and Joules said very effective. The celinet boards are all up on the walls now and they are working on the ceiling at the moment and will start to build the bass traps for the rear of the room after lunch today.. Sounds is very noticeably changed now.

When Joules returns next week they will build the bass traps, put the control room floor down, and start to build the fabric frames for the rest of the walls and ceilings. The acoustic doors are expected end of Feb, latest first week in March.
They seem to be in schedule for a finish in mid-March..

What's the reason for Joules choosing this over his usual method of building up multiple layers of sheet goods and dead sheets?

The front wall is only layers of chipboard with a 5cm gap filled with sand. Back board is covered in dead sheets as are the speaker enclosures.

I think it comes down to budget and his father, who he consults on all projects, had recently had some good success with sand filled walls, so Joules suggested we try this since there was not going to be a window into the live room. Despite us not having any acoustic measurements, Joules seems to be quite happy with the sound so far.. I hope next week we can get a measurement. Pity we did not do it before the construction of the 2nd set of walls.

Thanks for the info.

I am trying to decide exactly how to my exterior windows right now and wanted to ask what you used for your window frames.. are they aluminium?

It is difficult to find pre-fab non-hollow window frames, obviously UPVC frames are great for normal situations but they would totally compromise isolation due to them being light weight and hollow... aluminium frames also appear to be hollow... wood would be a good choice for mass but requires a lot of maintenance when used on the exterior. So what did you decide on?

not sure if Pella is available in the UK as they have top end windows which are wood wrapped with aluminium :-)

the wood is machined to fit the metal frame resulting in high density and a resilient exterior. i believe Martin, and some Andersen products may have similar lines.
